If two adjacent tiles are the same or if they are of value 1 or 2, they combine to make one tile with the total of the two adjacent tiles. Doubles start from Threes and that is the reason it is called Threes. When you move the tiles, it also adds a new tile which is either a '1' or a '2'. Colors are based on the value of the tiles.
